RICHARD PETRI (1823 Dresden - 1858 Fredericksburg / Texas)

Dwarf Fighting with an Albino Rat

Watercolor, 90 x 80 mm

Following his involvement in the 1848 Revolution, he came to the US as a political exile in 1850, joining the German colony at New Braunfels (TX) in 1851. While there, Petri painted portraits using crayon, watercolor and tempera. Petri moved to Fredericksburg (TX) in 1854 and continued to make portraits, focusing on individuals from local tribes whom he befriended. He also painted genre scenes picturing his fellow settlers. Sadly, he drowned at the young age of 34.
