FRIEDRICH OLIVIER (1791 Dessau 1859)
Colosseum Viewed from Southeast
Pen drawing, brown ink and preliminary sketch with graphite,
212 x 287 mm.
Olivier was living in the Palazzo Caffarelli with his fellow
artists Franz Horny (1798 - 1824) and Theodor von Rehbenitz
(1791 - 1861) in 1820. From the palace they had a view of
the Colosseum, as well as the Roman Forum. Horny often
depicted this view.
Since they were living together, it stands to reason that
the trio drew together and also exchanged thoughts on each
other's work. At times they would make changes, or even add
details to their friends' drawings.
Our work shows the seldomly depicted view of the colosseum,
as seen from the southeast. The style in which the tree's
silhouette, as well as the ground waves were drawn, shows a
great resemblance to Horny's work.
