REINERMANN, FRIEDRICH CHRISTIAN (1764 Wetzlar - 1835 Frankfurt)

Rock Formation and Stream close to St. Matiné in Switzerland

Signed, dated and located via the artist's inscription: "Studie bei St. Martiné im Münsterthal gezeichnet von F.C. Reinermann fec. 1794"
Preliminary drawing in black chalk, watercolor, heightened with white, on brown paper, 119 x 201 mm.

Reinermann travelled to Italy in 1789 where he spent several months as a student of Louis Ducros in Rome. Between the years 1793 and 1803 he worked in Switzerland, where this drawing was executed.
Its innovative view of nature seems to be anticipating Romanticism. This is evidenced by the lack of staffage, which is highly unusual for the time.
