HEINRICH DREBER, called FRANZ DREBER (1822 Dresden - 1875 Anticoli di Campagna near Rome)

Tree trunk roots and bushes

Pencil, with a blue-brown wash, 217 x 270 mm

Condition: slight soiling on the upper right-hand edge
Provenance: Walter Bareiss collection (1919 - 2007)

Dreber was a pupil at the Dresden Academy, studying under Adrian Ludwig Richter, among others. He made his home in Munich from 1841 - 1843, before moving to Italy in 1843. There, he formed a friendship with Friedrich Preller (1804 – 1874), which resulted in a shift in his own creative style. For his own part, he had a major influence on Edmund Friedrich Kanoldt (1845 – 1904) and Arnold Böcklin (1827 - 1901). The drawing on display was completed before his time in Italy.
