THOMAS
FEARNLEY (1802 Fredriksdahl - 1842 Munich)
View from Dresden or Pirna towards the mountains of the
Sächsische Schweiz (Saxon Switzerland)
Oil on canvas, 84 x 208 mm
From 1829 until 1830 Fearnley was a guest of his countryman
Johan Christian Dahl, who shared a house on the Elbe bank
with Caspar David Friedrich.
This sketch was executed in great haste, as the setting sun
restricted the sight. The view from Dresden or Pirna to the
south was reduced to the essential: under a cloudy sky one
can see the silhouettes of roofs in the middle ground. In
the very background one can recognize the mountains
Königstein and Lilienstein.
2007 a study, similar in colour and brushwork, was offered
by Emanuel von Baeyer (London). This painting had an old
inscription on the mount, stating "Fearnley" was the author.
