CHRISTIAN MORGENSTERN
(1805 Hamburg - 1867 Munich)

Seacoast after a storm at moonlight

Oil on canvas, 220 by 280 mm

Morgenstern began his artistic training at the workshop of Siegfried Bendixen in Hamburg. He travelled to Norway in 1827 and then continued his studies in Kopenhagen. After having moved to Munich in 1830 he became a close friend of the important landscape painter Carl Rottmann (1797 – 1850). He often returned to shores of the northern Atlantic coast, as they were the favorite motive of his paintings.
