JACOB CATS (1741 Altona near Hamburg - 1799 Amsterdam)
Landscape with Cornfield
Brown ink and wash, ca. 187 x 257 mm, on hand made paper
Signed "J. Cats". Verso inscribed with several (inventory?) numbers.
A colored version of the drawing, dated 1789, can be found in the
Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium (Inv. 4060 / 858).
Cats' conception of landscapes mediates between the Golden Age (17th
century) and the dawn of Romanticism. His drawing style is very
detail-oriented, resembling the old masters. The realistic village
in the background, the wide sky, as well as the cornfield shows the
artist's naturalistic influence.
