CARL GRAEB (1816 Berlin 1848)

In the year 1864 Graeb went on a long trip, starting in
Bavaria, going through Austria with northern Italy as his
destination. Between June 19th and 25th the artist resided
in Verona. He spent early July in Thum, close to the
neighboring village Goldiwil. On his way back he traveled
through Switzerland and Swabia.
His interest in architecture was even greater than that of
his teacher Carl Blechen (1798 Cottbus - 1840 Berlin).
Graeb's speciality was bringing static architecture to life.
He liked to assume the frog's eye view and avoided depicting
buildings from the front. His eye for detail becomes
apparent in the intricate drawings of architectural
components.
In contrast to the detail-oriented drawing, the use of
bright watercolors is more broad and lively.
