MICHAEL HERR
(1591 Metzingen - 1661 Nuremberg)

Paradise

Pen and black ink, brush and black and gray washes, 195 x 307-311 mm.

Inscribed in black ink below. "MH A. 1635 Nürnberg?" (left) "MH" (right). Bears an inscription on the verso: "A. d. Gr. Sternberg - Manderscheidschen Samlg. / lg (?) MH. 1635 Manherg?" (translated: from the collection of count Sternberg - Manderscheid /….)

Provenance: Collection of count Franz Joseph Graf von Sternberg-Manderscheid (1763 -1830)

Cronos (= time) is depicted asleep, so time is standing still. Naked men and women of all ages as well as animals are enjoying life in a fertile landscape. There are good reasons why this image of an absolute peace was drawn during the War of Thity Years'.
