FRANZ KRAMMER (1798 Vienna 1834)
Götz von Berlichingen in the Gypsy Camp (inspired by
Goethe's Götz von Berlichingen)
Pen and graphite in places stumped, 357- 61 x 463 -469 mm on velum
with Watermark:“J. WHATMA”(-N).
Condition: small loss at the lower border, pale foxing
The precise description of the place and figures in the “magic
forest” with branches of trees with spooky silhouettes suggest an
illustration after a yet unidentyfied literary source.
Franz Krammer studied history-painting at the Vienna Academy from
1815 until 1824 where he received several awards, including the
Lampi-Preis for his draftsmanship in 1824.
His interest were quite diverse: he painted portraits as well as
religious and historical subjects and also genre motives.
