Overbeck founded the Brotherhood of St. Luke with Franz Pforr in 1810, the first documented Secessionist movement in the history of art. He moved to Rome the same year, where he became the chief representative of the Nazarene art movement. Overbeck’s studio became one of Rome’s artistic hubs.
