JOSEPH WERNER THE YOUNGER (attributed) (1637 Bern 1710)
Legend of Joseph
On behalf of the Pharaoh Joseph is controlling the deposition of
cereals (1. Book of Moses, chapter 41; verses 47 – 49)
Brush and black ink, grey wash, within black ink framing lines, 86
by 116 mm. Inscription at the bottom right: “Werner”
Most likely this drawing was a preparation for a bible illustration
Conservation: on the left upper edge a small restoration, paper a
little thin at the borders (edges?), two smaller tears on the right
side and one on the upper left hand side.
Provenance: Private Collection Berlin
This is a juvenile work executed when Werner was an apprentice to
the workshop of Matthäus Merian the Younger (1621 – 1687) in
Frankfurt on the Main. Similarities can be found with illustrations
of Matthäus Merians the Elders Bible, printed in 1630. |
