JOSEPH WERNER THE YOUNGER (attributed) (1637 Bern 1710)

Legend of Joseph

On behalf of the Pharaoh Joseph is controlling the deposition of cereals (1. Book of Moses, chapter 41; verses 47 – 49)

Brush and black ink, grey wash, within black ink framing lines, 86 by 116 mm. Inscription at the bottom right: “Werner”
Most likely this drawing was a preparation for a bible illustration

Conservation: on the left upper edge a small restoration, paper a little thin at the borders (edges?), two smaller tears on the right side and one on the upper left hand side.

Provenance: Private Collection Berlin

This is a juvenile work executed when Werner was an apprentice to the workshop of Matthäus Merian the Younger (1621 – 1687) in Frankfurt on the Main. Similarities can be found with illustrations of Matthäus Merians the Elders Bible, printed in 1630.
